What is RSS?

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. An RSS Feed is actually a small, specially formatted (XML) text file that is updated frequently with the latest headlines, bloglines, or image links by a particular content provider (such as BBC.com, CNet, or your favorite blogger). RSS reader applications such as My Yahoo, NewsGator, and MediaTicker ‘poll’ the URL where the XML file is located to see if anything is new, and show you the results. How is MediaTicker Different Than Other Readers?

MediaTicker is a new kind of newsreader — it’s a "Media Reader." Some RSS feeds point to full-size images and thumbnail images instead of web pages. When you add these feeds to MediaTicker, it will automatically download and display these images in the ticker. If there are no images to download, it will display a thumbnail of the actual Web page referred to by the RSS feed (it might seem funny to display a thumbnail of a web page, but you’d be surprised how easy it is to recognize your favorite feeds, even if you can’t read the text).

Currently MediaTicker supports RSS 2.0 feeds only. This is the most common type of feed and is the only format that includes media support.

Adding an RSS Feed To Your MediaTicker

Subscribing to an RSS Feed is amazingly easy. Wherever you see an icon for an RSS Feed (examples: rss) just right-click on it and select "Copy Shortcut." Then paste the shortcut into the URL field in the options window, then click "Add Feed." That’s it, you’re done!

  RSS Community Resources

The community photo sharing web site "Flickr" is a great source for media RSS feeds. You can subscribe to feeds based on tags (photo keywords), groups (special interests), or individual users. Find whatever interests you!

If you have a Flickr account and want to share your photos with friends and family, send them MediaTicker and your Flickr RSS feed URL and they will be able to see your latest photos as you post them. No more sending out email notifications or reminders to check back!
