Adaptec's GoBack Rescues the Lovelorn

MILPITAS, May 4, 2000 - Adaptec, the global leader in innovative storage solutions, announced today that users of its GoBack software are well armed against damage caused by the ILOVEYOU e-mail worm, which struck PCs worldwide today according to the Washington Post Online.

Once again, a destructive computer virus has slipped through the antivirus shield and spread like wildfire across the Internet. Like other e-mail worms before it (e.g. Melissa, Worm.ExploreZip), ILOVEYOU targets Microsoft Outlook users with an infected attachment, this time titled "LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU.TXT.vbs." When opened, it replicates quickly, sending infected e-mails to every address in an individual's address book. According to early reports, the virus also corrupts the Internet Explorer browser, modifying the start-up page, and may modify the computer registry and rename files.

PCs protected by Adaptec's GoBack software, however, are safe from harm. "When a virus like ILOVEYOU strikes, GoBack allows you to revert your entire hard drive to exactly the way it was before the virus was introduced," explained Eric Schneider, vice president of Adaptec's Plymouth, Minn. facility where GoBack was developed. "Furthermore, you can retrieve the work that you may have been doing in the meantime. With GoBack, you can create virtual drives that show the state of your hard drive at virtually any other moment in recent time, so you can in essence 'go forward' again to retrieve any files created or revised in the intervening period."

Schneider is quick to point out that GoBack is not a replacement for antivirus software, but rather the perfect complement to it. "If a virus is active, GoBack will not disinfect your system," he explains. "But it will allow you to revert your system to a pre-virus state and retrieve and protect your data until an antivirus update is available for download."
